A road is not a fixed attraction
Duku is often shown as one of the highlights of a Xinjiang route, but its value depends on actually being open and safe for the planned vehicle and direction. Snow clearance, rain, landslide risk, traffic management and temporary controls can alter operations. A previous year’s date is not a guarantee for the current trip.
The practical question is not only “Will Duku open?” It is “What will our trip do if it does not?” The answer should be written before payment. A fallback may add road time, return through another corridor, move the departure city or remove a stop that no longer fits.
What to confirm
Do not accept a vague promise that the driver will “find a way.” The confirmed service should identify the normal route and the safe alternative, including any material change in hours or cost.

When to avoid making Duku essential
Travelers with a same-day flight after the corridor, limited mobility, young children or low tolerance for road uncertainty should use a route with more buffer. The same applies at the edges of the operating season.
Duku can still be an excellent scenic section. The point is to sell it honestly: conditional, weather-sensitive and subordinate to safety. A Xinjiang route should remain useful even when a famous seasonal road is not available.

There is no website date we can safely guarantee. Current road authorities and the operating team must confirm the relevant section close to travel.
Will a closure cancel the entire trip?
It should not if a fallback is designed. The return direction, hotel or one stop may change.
