Five days: choose one gateway region
Five usable days can support Urumqi, Tianchi and Turpan, or a compact Ili route when the traveler starts in Yining. It does not support Kanas, Ili, Turpan and Kashgar together. Count the arrival day honestly: a late flight after an international connection is not a full touring day.
A five-day product should keep a fallback for mountain weather and avoid same-day high-risk departure connections. Families and older travelers may prefer six days for the same route.
Seven to eight days: one region with depth
Seven or eight days work well for Ili when the gateway and road sequence are chosen carefully. The extra days allow Sayram Lake, a city reset, one or two distinct valleys and Nalati. They do not remove the need to disclose long drives or seasonal Duku uncertainty.
A private trip uses the time differently from a shared small group. Private travelers can shorten walks, adjust morning starts and request English guiding. Shared travelers follow the confirmed departure order and should evaluate language support before booking.
Nine to ten days: depth or a broad circuit
Nine days can deepen Ili with Xiata and Qiongkushitai, or support a demanding southern overland route. Ten days can connect Kanas and Hemu with selected Ili scenery, but it remains road-heavy.
If a traveler wants both cultural depth and slower mornings, the better use of ten days may be one region plus arrival and departure buffers. More distance is not automatically more value. Start with gateway, longest acceptable road day and must-see landscape, then choose duration.
Practical questions
Is one week enough for Xinjiang?
Yes for one coherent region, especially Ili or an Urumqi–Turpan route. It is not enough for the whole region.
Do arrival and departure days count?
Only when the actual schedule leaves usable time. Late arrivals and early departures should be treated as transfer days.
