Choose the visit that fits the rest of your Ili route
Nalati and Kalajun can both belong in a rewarding Ili journey. If you have time for only one substantial grassland visit, choose by the route you can enjoy: where you sleep before and after, which part of the scenic area you will enter, and how much time remains once transfers are counted. A beautiful name on an itinerary is useful only when the day gives you room to experience it.
For a first trip, Nalati is worth considering when the route already travels toward the eastern Ili valley and you want meadow, valley and forest scenery in one planned scenic day. Kalajun is worth considering when the itinerary gives the Tekes area a proper overnight and you want a grassland-focused visit there. These are planning choices, not fixed rankings; the exact circuit and conditions can matter more than the name.
Nalati: ask which scenic circuit you are actually visiting
The Xinyuan county government describes Nalati at the eastern end of the Ili valley, with mountains, forests, valleys, meadows and rivers. Its introduction lists different sightseeing and walking routes. That variety is the key planning point: a quote saying only “Nalati grassland” leaves the shape of the visit unclear.
Ask whether the proposed day uses the elevated meadow area, a river-valley circuit or another named route, and request the visit sequence in plain English. Confirm where the internal transport stops, where you walk and which part is optional. A shorter visit to one appropriate circuit can be a good choice when paired with a realistic overnight; combining several circuits needs more time.
If your aim is a gentle introduction, ask for a clearly described walk with a return point and time to sit or take photographs. If you want a longer hike, ask about the actual permitted trail and guide arrangement. A general scenic tour should not be sold as a hiking experience without those details.
Kalajun: define the grassland day before adding other sectors

Kalajun is especially interesting for travelers who want to spend time looking across open grassland and mountain landscapes. UNESCO includes Kalajun–Kuerdening as one of the four components of the Xinjiang Tianshan World Heritage property. That provides landscape context, but the heritage component and an individual visitor ticket are different things: ask which accessible visitor sector your itinerary covers.
For a first visit, define the grassland portion clearly before accepting a larger package of stops. If the proposal adds a canyon or another sector, ask how that changes transport, walking and the end of the day. More ticket inclusions can mean less time at the landscape you most wanted to see.
Build the visit around the actual Tekes-area accommodation and the next destination. A pleasant grassland day can lose its value if a long onward transfer turns it into a brief stop. Ask for the hotel-to-hotel sequence, including entry, internal transport, lunch and the return to the road vehicle.
When visiting both makes sense
Both can work when they have separate useful windows and the route connects them without sacrificing the rest of Ili. The strongest reason is a different experience at each: a particular Nalati circuit, followed or preceded by a distinct Kalajun grassland day. Ask your planner to explain that difference before adding the second admission and transfer.
Our listed eight-day small-group route combines Kalajun, Kurdining and Nalati with the wider Ili sequence. It is a driver-led format, and participation, hotels and the departure need confirmation for international visitors. Travelers wanting flexible walking or English interpretation should compare the guide arrangement and a private alternative rather than assuming every shared departure provides the same support.
On a shorter trip, choose one grassland well and retain time for Sayram Lake, a forest valley or Yining if those are important to you. The right decision depends on your interests. Someone who loves grassland photography may happily spend two days in similar terrain; someone seeking variety may prefer one grassland and one contrasting landscape.
Match the scenery to your travel date and walking needs
Do not book either grassland around a single green photograph. Grass color, flowers, snow on distant ridges and visibility change with season and weather. Tell the planner which part of the image appeals to you and ask what is realistic for your dates. A current view of the proposed sector is more useful than a generic summer promotional photo.
For families or travelers with limited walking tolerance, compare unavoidable distance, steps, surface and waiting time at each proposed circuit. Neither name alone guarantees an easy or accessible day. Ask whether the essential walk can be shortened and whether a rest option exists at the actual stop.
Private road transport may give you control between hotels and entrances, while internal scenic transport may be shared. Confirm the included shuttle sectors and any additional transport before payment. Keep warm or rain layers and essentials with you when you leave the private vehicle.
Ask for a comparison you can use
Send your dates, arrival and departure cities, nights available, group size and walking preferences. Ask for two versions with the same gateway and hotel standard: one including Nalati, the other Kalajun. Compare the scenic window, complete travel day and cost inclusions before deciding whether a version with both is worthwhile.
No compulsory shopping is part of our route planning. If you request a pastoral or hosted cultural visit, confirm the host, activity and any fee separately, with purchases optional. The two landscape images in this guide are AI-generated regional illustrations; they are not photographs of a specific visitor circuit or evidence of its present conditions.

Practical questions
Is Nalati or Kalajun better for a first Ili trip?
Choose by the exact scenic circuit, overnight sequence and time available outdoors. Nalati can suit an eastern Ili route, while Kalajun can suit a Tekes-area plan. Neither is automatically best for every group.
Should I visit both Nalati and Kalajun?
Both can be worthwhile when each has a distinct visit and adequate time. On a short trip, compare the second grassland with the value of a lake, forest valley or lighter city day.
Does a Nalati or Kalajun ticket include every scenic sector?
Do not assume that. Ask your quote to name the visitor sectors, admission and internal transport included for your date.
Can I expect the same green scenery all year?
No. Grass color, flowers, snow and visibility vary. Confirm the expected appearance and access of the proposed sector for your travel dates.
